The Real Reason Your Lip Balm Isn’t Working (and the Petroleum-Free Swaps I Actually Use)
If you’re constantly reapplying lip balm and still feel dry, cracked, or flakey... it’s not you. It’s your balm.
Most conventional lip products are made with petroleum-derived ingredients like petrolatum or mineral oil. These create a seal over your lips that feels hydrating — but doesn’t actually nourish your skin. In fact, they block moisture from getting in or out. So your lips stay dry, and you keep reapplying, thinking you’re helping.
This is why I call it the “chapstick trap.” More balm → more dryness → more balm. (And yes, it’s designed that way.)
🌿 Why Petroleum-Free Lip Balm Matters
Your lips are especially sensitive — the skin is thinner and more prone to moisture loss. That’s why it’s crucial to use ingredients that actually absorb, support barrier health, and nourish from within.
I avoid:
Petroleum jelly
Mineral oil
Synthetic fragrance
Silicones
Parabens (often found in conventional tints)
I look for:
Shea butter
Castor seed oil
Coconut oil
Vitamin E (tocopherol)
Beeswax or plant wax blends
Rosehip or raspberry seed oil (bonus for antioxidants)
